Giants end Burress' year, Pierce to play

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) The New York Giants expect Antonio Pierce to play in Sunday's game against Philadelphia while the team gathers information on the linebacker's involvement in a shooting that led to the season-ending suspension of star receiver Plaxico Burress.

Coach Tom Coughlin said Pierce would practice Wednesday with the Super Bowl champions.

"Each case is different, each is separate," Coughlin said when asked about the decisive action the Giants took against Burress on Tuesday - fining and suspending him for four games, the rest of the regular season.

Notre Dame to bring back Weis in 2009

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) Charlie Weis will return for a fifth year as Notre Dame's football coach despite posting his second straight disappointing season.

"Though this past season fell short of the expectations that all of us have for our football program, I am confident that Charlie has a strong foundation in place for future success and that the best course of action is to move forward under his leadership," athletic director Jack Swarbrick said in a statement released by the university Wednesday. (MORE)

Texas Tech, Leach negotiating extension

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers says the school is negotiating a contract extension with Mike Leach, amid reports that the Red Raiders coach has met with the University of Washington about the Huskies' top job.

Myers wouldn't confirm or deny newspaper reports that Leach was in Seattle this week to talk to UW officials. Myers said Leach didn't seek permission for an interview and that he hadn't been contacted by Washington. (MORE)

'Canes fire Laviolette, rehire Maurice

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Peter Laviolette won more games than any American-born coach in NHL history. But he didn't win enough of them lately to keep his job with the Carolina Hurricanes, so they replaced him with their winningest coach - the same one Laviolette himself replaced five years earlier.

The Hurricanes fired Laviolette on Wednesday, brought back Paul Maurice to take over for him and moved Hall of Fame player and assistant general manager Ron Francis behind the bench as Maurice's associate coach. (MORE)
